SAP Lumira

With SAP Lumira 2.x, SAP is realigning itself in the area of front-end tools in 2017. SAP is thus creating a tool that links the functionalities of Lumira 1.x with the Design Studio. That is, a tool for self-service BI is married with a tool that enables complex displays of management reports. Below we give you an overview of the product.

General

The functionalities of the former Lumira 1.x can be used by the business departments without the assistance of IT, while the functionalities of the former Design Studio generally always require the involvement of IT. What at first sounds impossible has been put on a uniform technical basis by SAP, even though the division into two components of the tool remains - but with the advantage that results from one area can be used in the other. An example of this would be the reuse of an ad-hoc report designed by the business department in a complex management dashboard. The two components of SAP Lumira 2.0 are called SAP Lumira Discovery and SAP Lumira Designer.

Both components have not only been combined in SAP Lumira 2.0, but have also been fundamentally revised and improved. It is very clear that SAP is putting a lot of effort into this in order to not only keep up with the strong front-end competition (e.g. QlikView, Tableau, TM1), but also to be able to offer additional added value.

Recommendation

In addition to the on-premise solution Lumira, SAP is also increasingly focusing on the alternative SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC). This may offer advantages over Lumira as an alternative.

SAP Lumira

Your advantage

  • Integration of different evaluation tools in one basic tool
  • Complete interlocking with all current BW variants (BW 7.4 with and without HANA, BW/4)
  • Easy conversion or reuse of ad-hoc analyses in advanced dashboards

SAP Lumira Discovery and SAP Lumira Designer

SAP Lumira Discovery, which largely corresponds to the former SAP Lumira 1.x, can still be used by the specialist departments to create data analyses independently. In addition to the fact that it is easy to use, the fact that data from different sources can be linked together (e.g. data from BW can be linked with data from an Excel or SQL server and interpreted as a new data source) certainly stands out here. By creating your own characteristics and key figures, analyses can be created. These analyses can then be combined into so-called stories and saved.

SAP Lumira Designer, on the other hand, hides the already familiar Design Studio, which is already SAP's central tool for complex management dashboards. The decisive advantage now, however, is that analyses or stories created in SAP Lumira Discovery can be used and extended in the Designer without any problems. In this way, analyses created by the business department can grow into further complex management dashboards that nevertheless clearly bear the handwriting of the business department and can thus be developed more quickly and in a more targeted manner than before. Elaborate mock-ups from the specialist departments, which would otherwise first have to be recreated 1:1 by IT, can now be used directly and save development time and costs.

Recommendation

SAP Lumira gives users the previously missing option of having more advanced and appealing dashboards developed from ad-hoc analyses created at short notice, without always having to reinvent the wheel and write elaborate requirements.

Your advantage

  • Unification of ad-hoc reports and elaborate dashboards in one tool
  • Possibility to expand user-generated analyses into dashboards without duplicating efforts
  • Effective combination of user analyses created in-house and complex reporting requirements

Summary

SAP is now creating an approach that addresses the desire of most departments to be able to create analyses much more independently and flexibly. Nevertheless, this alone will not be enough, and the creation of complex analytical reports and dashboards will still require the involvement of IT, but now far more networked with the business department than before. This suits our understanding at CALEO very well, because we have always combined the best of two worlds: A deep understanding of Enterprise Performance Management and Business Intelligence and the technical know-how of SAP applications. SAP Lumira offers an ideal platform here.

Our offer

SAP Lumira sounds interesting to you, but you don't just want to see the theory, but also practical examples and critically question its use? We organize a workshop with you and highlight the topic together. We will not only show you live examples on the system, but also highlight the following topics:

  • How does SAP Lumira fit into your system landscape?
  • What are the limitations of the software?
  • What happens to my existing analytics and/or management dashboards created through Lumira 1.x or Design Studio?
  • What added value do you gain from using it compared to your previous solutions?
  • How will the business department ideally dovetail with the IT department in the future?
  • How does Lumira differentiate itself from the cloud solution (SAC) offered by SAP?
